Big Break

French qualifier, Severine Bremond, ranked 129 in the world, played a very solid match in losing to Justine Henin-Hardenne in the Wimbledon quarterfinals today. But now is her really big chance. Based on this result, Bremond’s ranking will soar (and it’s all about the rankings) and she will have the opportunity to play in the main draw of tournaments for the next 12 months. It seems Bremond’s parents insisted she attend university for a bit so she majored in pre-law for a year before hitting the tour full-time. Bremond may be a late bloomer at 26, but like so many French players she has clean strokes and a strong all-around game. Her coach is now her husband who she married last year. Despite spending twice as much time on court during her previous matches as Henin-Hardenne (i.e. 8 hours and 2 minutes versus 4 hours and 1 minute), she seemed pretty quick around the court and showed she has a nice all-court game – she served and volleyed, hit her last serve of the match at 117 MPH and has a nice one-handed backhand. Let’s see what kind of performance she puts on when she reaches the bright lights of Broadway at the end of the summer…
