Grass Stains

So the next time you see an aerial shot of the grounds and courts at Wimbledon check out where the courts are most worn, i.e. beige/brown rather than green... it is amazing with all the talk over the years about new technology, better rackets and player fitness etc. that the majority of players are now rallying from the baseline on the grass at Wimbledon. It's only day four and the courts are all totally worn at the baseline and the service line/T area is still green grass. If you've never played on grass, it is wonderful to play on and it feels so soft under your feet. Good grass courts like the ones at Wimbledon really play like slick, fast hard courts with low skidding bounces. Therefore, it is totally possible to play and win from the baseline. Of course a big serve helps, but frankly having a good serve will win you points on any surface... which btw is why Pete Sampras should have won the French. Then again tennis is a mental game as well and I think players like Sampras made the mistake of trying to change their playing styles too much for the clay while nowadays most players have learned they DON'T need to change their games that much to play on the lawns of Wimbledon!
