Team Tennis Has Finally Arrived

Some may be wondering about the headline above since WTT aka World Team Tennis (www.wtt.com) has been around for decades… it has and it has been successful for a long time in many regards. However, now it just seems as if it has found a more permanent place as a “venue” for rising and ex-stars to play some big-time tennis while also offering current pros a month in which to compete in fun matches while earning some dough and practicing parts of their games without the pressure of winning matches and earning tour points. The fixed schedule also makes it easier to market the top stars and attract fans to the matches. The short one set matches and fan friendly attractions make for a very entertaining evening. WTT also promotes adult, collegiate and junior league teams, but this is an area where there could be better coordination with the USTA because the whole world of amateur “team/league tennis” in the U.S. is very confusing. Hopefully, this coordination and integration will improve over time because all of these teams offer an opportunity to introduce and reintroduce people to the game and generate enthusiasm for the sport of tennis!
