The Former Yugoslavia

Croatia has been making itself known on the pro circuit for several years, it won the Davis Cup last year and had 8 players in the Wimbledon main draw with one left, i.e. Mario Ancic. It’s a tiny country, but it’s produced many top men, i.e. Goran Ivanisevic, Ivan Ljubicic, Mario Ancic, Ivo Karlovic and women, i.e. former stars Sabrina Goles and Iva Majoli, who won Roland Garros, and the current crop which includes Karolina Sprem and Jelena Kostanic. But the real star of the former Yugoslavia this year is “Serbia and Montenegro” which had 5 players in the main draw and 3 of them are still left, i.e. Ana Ivanovic, Jelena Jankovic and Novak Djokovic who ironically plays Mario Ancic – I don’t know their personal relationship, but it should be an interesting match and not just for the tennis match-up because the two countries used to be at war with one another! Anyway, let’s put the two countries back together, just for a moment of math fun, and together they had 15 players in the main draw of Wimbledon this year – not bad at all!
