Wimbledon Prep

court surfaces

What’s the best way to transition from the slow red clay of Roland Garros to the fast grass courts at The All England Racquet and Croquet Club?  As he has for the past four years, Roger Federer went to play a tournament on grass in Halle, Germany, immediately after the French final while Rafael Nadal hopped on a train to London to play the event at Queen’s Club.  BTW, this is the first time in the Open era that the same two men have played for the French and Wimbledon titles.  Bjorn Borg, who won five consecutive Wimbledon titles and was the last man to win the French and Wimbledon in the same year in 1980, used to practice on grass in England for two weeks between the French and Wimbledon without playing any matches.  Amelie Mauresmo trained for Wimbledon by playing on the private grass court at the British Embassy in Paris and then played in the Eastbourne warm-up tournament where she lost early to Nathalie Dechy although she did win the doubles title with Svetlana Kuznetsova.  Meanwhile, some players like Andre Agassi and Martina Hingis prefer to prep for the big W by practicing on fast hard courts rather than playing on grass.  So what’s the key?  I suppose it’s to know thyself very well and learn what works best for your game!
