Wimbledon's Hallowed Centre Court

It’s interesting the choices that Roland Garros and Wimbledon have made regarding commemorating special occasions this year. A month ago in Paris, The French Tennis Federation had an elegant on-court ceremony right after Rafael Nadal broke Guillermo Vilas’ long-standing record for the most consecutive clay court match wins – they had some speeches and Vilas presented Nadal with this cool-looking glass “trophy” which had layers of a clay court (or something like that!) inside it. Then at Wimbledon earlier this week when Federer broke Borg’s streak for most consecutive match wins on grass, there was no ceremony which is what Federer said he preferred. So then Agassi played his last match (ever) at The Championships yesterday and right after the match finished, BBC Commentator, Sue Barker, appeared on Centre Court and briefly interviewed both Rafa and Andre. That would have been absolutely unheard of a decade ago at Wimbledon where they never interviewed the champions on-court after the finals as the other slams had done for years. But times change and Wimbledon, despite its reputation as a stickler for tradition, has actually mellowed a bit over time. Sue Barker started interviewing the champions on court after the finals a few years ago and now they’ve possibly started yet another new tradition?!
