A Win is a Win
Scotsman Andy Murray upended Roger Federer in Cincinnati and broke the Swiss star's string of 17 consecutive finals. For the record, I didn't see the match, but apparently Federer did not play his best. Clearly, Murray had a great day all the while making his new coach, Brad Gilbert, look like a genius! So what's the real significance of this match? Nada to Federer because he's due for an off day and much better for it to happen in Cincy rather than Flushing Meadows. Will the other players on the tour start to think Federer has slipped a notch? I doubt this lone loss to Murray will do that. The real significance of this match is what it COULD do to Andy Murray. He's bound to feel awesome about beating Federer, think he played well, etc. So will this win be a big boost to his confidence at the upcoming U.S. Open? Will it inspire him to work hard on and off the court to really push himself to the next level? Most importantly, will it make him have the confidence and will to fight even harder on his bad days to pull out the win?
