Electronic Lines

"Technology improves lives." Technology can also improve the tennis experience for tennis fans. The introduction of electronic line calling systems for all the U.S. Open series events and the 2006 U.S. Open is a technological leap forward for professional tennis. The system may not be absolutely perfect, but it seems pretty darn good already and will improve quickly as technology always does. Within a couple years all pro tournaments will most likely be using the system. What about linespeople? If I were one, I'd find a different part-time job. Like line workers in the auto industry when automation entered the workplace, obsolescence is only a matter of time... How else could technology impact professional tennis in the future? There are many real-time applications that already exist which could allow fans in their seats at tournaments or sitting in their living rooms at home enjoy the matches more. Statistics and match/tournament data and live interactive games available on wireless devices or at-home computers, as well as simply the ability to order your next beer without ever leaving your seat and missing a point!
