Gilbert "Crossing" the Pond

Brad Gilbert won’t actually be moving to London, but he will be spending a lot of time on the road and a fair amount in the UK. The current plan is that he will coach Scotsman Andy Murray for about 7 months of the year and spend the rest of the time with other promising LTA (aka British) players. Brad will head over to the LTA’s new training facility at Roehampton in off weeks, other times he’ll meet up with the players at the LTA center in Spain and sometimes the players will travel to California, Florida or other parts of the world to work with Gilbert. Sounds like a sweet deal for Brad who will be earning nearly $1 million for his services. As the American superstar coach heads to the other side of the pond to beef up British tennis hopes, what is the impact of this announcement on the future of American tennis? Is this a model that the USTA (or other countries’) player development program should be considering? What coaches, American or foreign, could play this role?
