Injury-Free

Injuries strke again... Linday Davenport, who is on the comeback trail after a lengthy layoff since March for a back injury, retired in the finals today against Justine Henin-Hardenne at the Pilot Pen tournament with a shoulder/arm injury. It would be interesting to survey the number of serious injuries that the top players have had over the past 10-20 years. I mean injuries that require surgery and a break of 6-12 months. I imagine that they've been a pretty healthy crew. Agassi had a serious wrist injury many years ago, but until his recent back problems he's been injury-free. And his wife, Steffi Graf, like Chris Evert in the previous generation, played her entire career without a serious, lengthy injury layoff. Look at the women's game the past couple years, Clijsters, Henin-Hardenne, the Williams sisters, Davenport and even Mauresmo have been out for months with serious injuries. I believe that's why no one has dominated women's tennis recently. Clearly, it makes a difference. I mean look at Serena Williams. She was on a total roll several years ago until she had surgery for her knee/hamstring and she's never been the same since. Maybe she lost some focus and some fitness along the way, but if she'd stayed healthy I'm sure she would have dominated for a couple more years. Nowadays many of the top players travel with their own personal fitness trainers because they realize how important fitness is to their success. Next time you're watching some tennis on TV, check out how many players have on ankle braces or wrist wraps or call for the trainer at least once during the match!
