On the Tennis Runway

Remember Andre Agassi’s denim Nike tennis shorts? Or what about Serena Williams’ Puma catsuit? The former “had legs” as they say, but I’m not so sure about the latter. These days “hemlines” are moving in many directions… men’s shorts, possibly following the trend in the NBA, have gotten progressively longer over the past few years and now Rafael Nadal’s pirate pants or clamdiggers almost fall below his knees! Conversely, men’s sleeves have gotten shorter as the powers that be in professional tennis have slowly allowed sleeveless tops at all tournaments. These new “revealing” tops allow players to show off their bicep bulges! On the women’s side, dresses have tried to make a comeback and the major brands such as Nike, Adidas and Reebok have tried various styles, but they haven’t totally caught on… yet. In addition, it seems that “short shorts” are possibly coming into vogue as evidenced by several players such as Anastasia Myskina (Nike) and Tatiana Golovin (Lacoste) who have been wearing them in the past year. The hottest new tennis fashions have been created by Stella McCartney for Adidas. Blonde Russian bombshell, Maria Kirilenko, has been wearing the McCartney styles in 2006. Hopefully, more designers will add a little panache to the sport scene in the near future... can't wait for the U.S. Open tennis fashion show to begin!
