No American man or woman made it to the quarters at Wimbledon for the first time in years and so there will be big-time pressure on all the American players at the upcoming U.S. Open tournament. James Blake is now the lone American in the top 10 and Lindsay Davenport is ranked 10th. After the U.S. Open, Andre Agassi will hang up his rackets for good. So is it really crisis time for American tennis? Well it depends on what your perspective is and what the goal is. There may never be another generation like Sampras, Agassi, Courier and Chang, but both Blake and Roddick are awesome role models and spokesmen for the game even if neither one makes it to Number 1 (again). The Bryan brothers have just completed a career Grand Slam in doubles and possess an infectious enthusiasm for the game. On the women's side, Venus and Serena, backed by the efforts of many others, have already attracted more minorities to the sport. But there needs to be a clear goal that everyone in American tennis can rally around - is it producing a future Number 1 or getting more kids and/or adults playing the game or both? As Margaret Mead said “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed it is the only thing that ever has.”
