World Cup Fever in NYC

srichaphanfans

Flushing Meadows is not yet Melbourne in January, but it’s getting closer, at least in some ways!  At the Australian Open, the Swedish and Greek fans have long held court as some of the most vocal supporters for their favorite tennis players (from their home countries of course!).  During Paradorn Srichaphan's first round match at the 2006 U.S. Open, the Thai contingent was colorful and loud while Shinobu Asagoe had her team of Japanese supporters.  In the Grandstand, most of the fans were on Marcos Baghdatis' side, and a few of his flag-waving compatriots added some extra noise.  Late at night in a nearly-empty Grandstand, Indian star, Sania Mirza, had a vocal group of young male admirers whistling loudly with her every winner.  In the end, the U.S. Open reflects the many nationalities which inhabit New York City and create the diversity of its culture.
