All About Agassi

The “buzz in week one” of the U.S. Open has really been all about Andre Agassi. With the rained out matches, the TV telecasts have filled empty airtime with repeats of both Andre’s classic U.S. Open matches with Sampras, as well as, his instant classics from the past week - especially the encounter with Marcos Baghdatis. But the truly amazing thing about Agassi’s run so far at the 2006 U.S. Open is that he’s managed to play very well and survive two long, hard-fought, pressure-packed matches after barely playing all summer. It’s remarkable to be able to play at such a high-level from the get go and also have the physical stamina to last through such tough opening matches. Some players seem to be able to do that, to be able to excel with very little match play prior to a big tournament. Monica Seles was able to do it and Serena and Venus Williams have done it after their injury layoffs as well. But it’s a rare talent and most players need the practice and match play to get their games in form, let alone the physical conditioning to instantly survive a tough five-setter. He really is “Amazing Andre”…
