Big Break

So where does she go from here? The year is far from over, but time will tell which road Jelena Jankovic travels over the next twelve months. A year ago, Jelena was ranked in the top 20 and then had a terrible string of losses to start 2006 due to illness, etc. Now she has made a big splash again and was a few points from making the finals of the U.S. Open. She led a set and 4-2 with several opportunities to go to 5-2. In the press conference after the match, she (and Justine Henin-Hardenne) talked about how well she’d played for the first part of the match. But then Jelena admitted afterwards that she let herself get too upset and distracted by line calls, Henin-Hardenne’s back problems, the wind, etc. She attributed it all to being young and said she would learn from the experience. Time will tell. Jankovic clearly has a strong game, moves well and seems to enjoy the spotlight. After an impressive Grand Slam performance, some players make the leap into the top echelons of the tennis world and stay there for many years while others don’t capitalize on their performance because of a loss of focus, the pressures of fame, injuries etc. Let’s hope Jelena makes the most of this opportunity the second time around…
