Endurance Test?

marathon

Should men’s matches be three out of five sets?  With two out of three set matches all the pressure and critical moments are condensed into a shorter time period which should make many matches more exciting.  Sure, there have been some epic five set marathons, but there have also been many more long matches with a set or two of sub-par play.  Tennis is not an endurance sport such as marathon running and it’s also not a sport like golf.  Tennis players need to possess strength, flexibility and cardio-vascular fitness, as we well as the endurance to play top tennis for several hours.  But shouldn’t most matches be 2-3 hours rather than 4-5 hours?  Do fans really enjoy sitting and watching matches for that many hours?  American team sports such as the NBA, NFL and NHL play very competitive and physically demanding games in less than three hours.  Shorter and more predictable matches time wise will also help TV coverage which is always so important to the success of professional tennis.  Some purists may complain that the better player will win a longer match, but conversely shorter matches will force players to really produce their best tennis from the first point because if they lose the first set they could be in big trouble.  Tennis should be about quality, not quantity…
