Fashion Forward

Nike “just did it” again at the 2006 U.S. Open. It was refreshing to add a fashion sense to the tennis scene… It’s been awhile since Andre Agassi shook things up with his denim shorts and neon prints and Serena Williams donned her black Puma catsuit. James Blake tipped his hat to the retiring Agassi by wearing one of Andre’s old designs for one of his early-round matches. Blake donned the short black shorts with pink/orange neon lycra bicycle shorts underneath and a bright white collared tennis shirt, non-existent these days, with a loud pink/orange and black geometric design. It brought back memories. Maria Sharapova made her mark with the Audrey Hepburn inspired “black evening dress.” And of course, Roger Federer continued his new tradition of wearing a special “jacket” on-court for his matches. For the U.S. Open, Federer was decked out in a sort of black bomber warm-up jacket with custom designs on the left chest and back of the jacket – a bit hard to decipher since they were black-on-black designs. Wonder what he’ll wear while walking on court at the 2007 Australian Open?! Fittingly, both Sharapova and Federer hit the New York Fashion Shows in the days right after the U.S. Open. Sharapova caught the Marc Jacobs show while Federer attended the Oscar de la Renta show sitting next to his friend, Anna Wintour, Editor of "VOGUE."
