Where did the days of Bjorn Borg and Chris Evert go?
The players who were always so cool under pressure and you could never see a change in their emotions or demeanor whether they were winning or losing.
Today, it seems as if the players at the top of the rankings on both the men’s and women’s tours are actually quite good about not letting their frustrations impact their tennis or their demeanor except in positive fist-pumping moments.
But if you watched a lot of matches at the 2006 U.S. Open, then you probably saw a broken racket in what seemed like every match.
I don’t have any statistical data to compare the number of broken rackets at the 2006 U.S. Open to the 1986 U.S. Open, but it definitely seemed as if there were more cracked frames this year.
Or maybe it was also that players seemed to “lose it” so much more quickly.
Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s good for players to let out their frustrations and some actually even start to play better after releasing some negative emotion.
I guess it’s the amount of physical destruction, i.e. broken rackets, that is a bit of a disturbing trend.
Do you think it’s related to the fact that umpires now carry a list of curse words in multiple languages?!
