If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em”… “It's just not enough points, you know, that really make the difference. That money, we can use it for better causes than for, you know, challenges or whatever it is. It's only on the one or two biggest courts,” said Roger Federer.
Ironically, Federer, one the few players who was and still is against the instant replay system, utilized it more than any other player! According to the U.S. Open website, Federer challenged 17 calls and was correct 41% of the time. James Blake was in second place challenging 13 times and being correct 46% of the time. Andy Roddick, who as the finalist also played seven matches, questioned 10 calls, but was only right 20% of the time! Maria Sharapova, the women’s champion, only challenged three calls and was correct once! Jelena Jankovic led the women with 6 challenges and she was correct 50% of the time. Overall, the women averaged 1.6 challenges per match (two out of three sets) and were correct 36% of the time. In contrast, the men averaged 3.5 challenges per match (granted they were three out of five set matches) and were correct 31% of the time. In the end, Federer does raise a valid question regarding the money spent on instant replay technology and whether those funds would be better spent promoting the game.
