Taking Your Leave

It’s always hard to walk away from something you really love… Every top athlete wants to finish his/her career by winning a major championship as Pete Sampras managed to do a few years ago, but that rarely happens. Sometimes an athlete announces that he/she will stop after a certain event or on a certain date, but that can sometimes be a difficult path to take. So what is the best route? Despite the potential for bad days, announcing a date for retirement benefits everyone. The athlete has an end goal and a limited time frame in which to focus while fans have a chance for one last look. Everyone wishes that Andre Agassi had won today, but the fact that Andre had announced beforehand that the U.S. Open would be his last tournament created an inspired and emotional series of matches which left fans feeling that they had had a chance for a proper goodbye. And for Agassi too… as he said in his post-match remarks to the sell-out crowd in Arthur Ashe stadium, “The scoreboard said I lost today but what it doesn’t say is what I found. I have found you, I will take you and the memory of you for the rest of my life.”
