Trading on Talent

Frenchman Richard Gasquet is one of the most talented players on tour at the moment. Gasquet, the 2002 World Junior Champion, has been considered a huge talent since he hit the tour a few years ago and is slowly starting to realize his potential. The versatility of his all-court game is evident by his titles on grass at Nottingham before Wimbledon and in mid July on clay in Gstaad, Switzerland. The knock on Gasquet has been his mental strength, his fighting spirit at times and whether he can deal with the huge expectations from the French fans. He’s also struggled with some injuries which have hampered his training. To reach the very top of the pro tour, you need a combination of talent, mental strength, strong work ethic, a fit body and a little luck along the way. Natural talent can take a player very far, but to be a multiple Grand Slam champion you need all of the above. There are several incredibly talented players who didn’t fully realize all of their potential, e.g. Frenchman Henri Leconte and Romanian Ilie Nastase. Talented all-court players have also often taken longer to mature into their greatness as Roger Federer and Amelie Mauresmo have proved in the past couple years. Time will tell how far Gasquet can travel…
