All-around Greatness

ameliebackhand

Which would you rather have - one huge weapon or a solid all-around game?  For a while it seemed that the top players were all about their big weapons, e.g. Sampras’ serve, Becker’s serve, Serena’s power ground strokes and serve, Steffi Graf’s forehand, etc.  But if you look at the top of the men’s and women’s tennis ladders these days, the players have very solid all-around games more so than really at any other time in professional tennis.  For example, Roger Federer does have a great forehand, but I’d argue that his greatness should really be attributed to his diversity of skills.  On the women’s side, Amelie Mauresmo and Justine Henin-Hardenne have solid all-court games without one huge weapon and Maria Sharapova doesn’t really have one big weapon besides maybe her mental toughness and fighting spirit.  And of course, the beautiful one-handed backhand seems to be making a nice little comeback of its own as well…
