I'm Just a Tennis Player

What’s the responsibility of being a pro tennis player? Sania Mirza, the Indian tennis player, has become a superstar in India. As a result, her words and actions have been scrutinized and her support has been sought for a variety of causes. Roger Federer has done an admirable job handling the spotlight and responsibilities as the Number One player in the world for the past couple years. But should he be doing even more? Is it enough to fulfill your press and sponsor requirements or should players use their popularity to promote causes in which they believe? This is really a tricky situation because some would argue that just because someone is famous doesn’t mean that they should be able to raise the profile of their pet projects. On the other hand, players, such as Arthur Ashe and now Andre Agassi, have used their fame to raise awareness and sometimes money for very worthwhile causes. Therefore, players may not have an obligation to “do more,” but they do have an opportunity to achieve more…
