Coaching Call

The Sony Ericsson WTA Tour is continuing its test of on-court coaching during a few fall tournaments. Recently, there was a post on Ana Ivanovic’s website which listed how often various top players had actually requested to have their coach come on to the court during the summer test at the Montreal and New Haven tour stops. Out of the top 20 players, only three players utilized the new rule several times. Svetlana Kuznetsova requested her coach five times in seven matches. Martina Hingis asked her mom and coach, Melanie Molitor, to come courtside five times in five matches. Daniela Hantuchova requested courtside advice from her coach eight times in two matches! Interestingly, more than half the top 20 players never requested coaching. Many factors probably influenced the players’ decisions regarding coaching, e.g. how they were playing that particular week; whether they were winning or losing, and their personal philosophy regarding on-court coaching. Clearly, this is not statistically significant data because it was only used at two events, but it does offer a glimpse of which players might take advantage of the new rule. In that light, it was a little surprising that Martina Hingis, who is usually credited with being such a “thinker” on court and quite shrewd in terms of how to construct points and win matches, chose to request her mom/coach courtside so many times.
