Serve-and-Stay-Back

roddickbackhand

Everyone keeps asking where have all the serve-and-volleyers gone?  Even Pete Sampras is contemplating a return to Wimbledon so he can show all the young guns how to really play on grass!  Well, I’ll tell you where they have all gone.  They are just at-home hanging out on the baseline and doing quite well, thank you.  The tall, big-serving Croatians, Ivo Karlovic and Mario Ancic, seem to prefer to serve and play from the baseline.  Roger Federer even served and volleyed much less at the 2006 Wimbledon than he had in previous years.  So whaddup?!  And is all this resting on the baseline a good thing?  I think the main cause for the change of approach is that so many of the current crop of big servers either grew up on European clay, e.g. Ancic and Safin, or they are just used to winning so many free points off their serve itself, e.g. Andy Roddick.  In addition, few of these players play doubles much anymore.  Therefore, they’ve never focused on developing a serve-and-volley game.  Don’t worry, like everything in life, history shall repeat itself soon.  A new crop of serve-and-volleyers will appear to challenge all the baseliners.  In the meantime, the “strong serve and stay back” approach has actually led to a few more rallies which is not such a bad thing after all!
