America's Best

Tennis fans in the U.S., though probably not in the rest of the world, are constantly lamenting the state of American tennis. This year there was no American woman competing at the year-end Sony Ericsson Championships although Andy Roddick and James Blake did make it to the year-end Masters Cup tying Spain with two competitors in the elite eight. So who is the Number One American? Lindsay Davenport holds that honor on the women's side right now although through lack of play her ranking has dropped to 25. But who had the better year on the men's side - Roddick or Blake? Roddick resurrected his year by winning a summer title, reaching the U.S. Open finals and clinching a spot in the year-end Masters Cup. However, Roddick’s 2006 record was 0-2 against Blake. On the other hand, Blake captured 5 titles, reached the quarters of the U.S. Open, the finals of the Masters Cup and closed out the season ranked fourth, ahead of Andy Roddick... so? Blake held the honor as the Number One American earlier in the year, but let’s now crown him king of the U.S. mountain for 2006!
