Almost a year ago, Martina Hingis came out of retirement and rejoined the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour after three years away from the game. In less than a year, Hingis has won 2 tournaments, cracked the top ten and made it to the year-end Sony Ericsson Championships in Madrid. For most players, that would be a rather exceptional year, but is it for a former Number One player?Martina has said she is really enjoying the comeback, but one wonders whether she’ll continue to enjoy the tour as much in a year if she is losing in the quarters and ranked around 10 in the world.Clearly, the life of a pro tennis player is exciting on many levels because top pros travel the globe, stay in the best hotels in the most exciting cities and are treated like royalty whenever the tour arrives in a new city. The money isn’t bad either and for a player such as Hingis, it still amounts to millions of dollars in off-court earnings in addition to whatever she collects in prize money.Although Hingis is still only 26, it would not be surprising to see her walk away for good if she doesn’t win another Grand Slam title or at least compete in the finals of one in the next year or two.
