2006: Moments That Hopefully Never Happen Again

sunset

JANUARY
  • Justine Henin-Hardenne quitting early in the second set of the Australian Open final because she had a stomach ache from taking too many anti-inflammatory pills the night before for a sore shoulder.
  • Henin-Hardenne never apologizing publicly for her retirement in the Australian Open final.  One could debate when and how Henin-Hardenne retired, but there's no question that her actions and the circumstances required a detailed explanation and public apology to Amelie Mauresmo and the fans... it never happened.
  • During the Australian Open, Nicolas Kiefer, incomprehensibly tossed his racket across the net towards his opponent, Sebastien Grosjean, who was about to hit a volley return.  It was a surreal, bizarre moment.  To make matters worse, when Grosjean appealed to the umpire and referee, Kiefer put up his hands and acted as if it was completely unintentional.  Watch the instant replay, Nicolas…

MARCH

  • Where is Jennifer Capriati?  If you saw her brief, live interview with ESPN during the NASDAQ 100, you witnessed her tearful description of her multiple surgeries and rehab for shoulder and arm injuries... which still appear to have not healed.  It was painful and bewildering.

MAY

  • Maria Sharapova blew a 5-1 third set lead and lost to Dinara Safina in the round of 16 at Roland Garros.  Lesser players might have struggled for months after such a loss, but Sharapova seemed to be able to shrug it off as she has other, past bizarre losses, e.g. 6-0 6-0 loss to Lindsay Davenport at the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells in 2005.

JUNE

  • After winning the Wimbledon final, Amelie Mauresmo remarked to BBC announcer and former tour star, Sue Barker, that she hopes no one ever again asks about her nerves in big matches.
  • Argentine player, David Nalbandian, asked Wimbledon officials for an early match time so that he could be finished in time to see his country compete in the World Cup soccer tournament.  Nalbandian’s request was granted and he was upset by Fernando Verdasco in the third round.
  • Streaker on Centre Court at Wimbledon... It’s really more disturbing than amusing - how do these guys keep slipping through security?
JULY
  • The on-court coaching test on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.  Apparently, the tests may continue, but let's hope it is never made permanent.
AUGUST
  • Kim Clijsters fell and reinjured her wrist at the Canadian Open and couldn’t defend her U.S. Open title.

SEPTEMBER

  • Maria Sharapova... bananagate... need I say more?!

OCTOBER

  • Mary Pierce collapsed with a serious knee injury during a match in Stuttgart.  It was painful to see and one hopes she's able to make it back on tour and eventually retire on her own timetable.
