A Time for Giving

hands

Tennis has done a lot for charity over the years and it still does, but often no one knows.  For example, do you know what the official charity is for the ATP Tour or the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour?  Have you heard about Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day at the U.S. Open or La Journee Benney Berthet at the French Open?  Both benefit kids’ charities.  Did you know that Maria Sharapova started a charity for at-risk children around the world?  Or that Roger Federer supports programs for kids in South Africa?  Have you heard about the American Express Aces for Charity program which raises money with every ace hit at most Grand Slam tournaments.  Or the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour’s Habitat for Humanity programs?  There are many more charitable efforts that you’ve never heard about because tennis players individually and the tours as a whole support many charitable causes that are never promoted sufficiently.  I respect that many players prefer to support causes anonymously or with little fanfare, but in other instances, it’s simply that the charitable efforts are not publicized well enough.  And they should be - the charity itself should receive the proper PR about its worthwhile programs and the players’ efforts should be acknowledged.  It “does good” for both… and they both deserve it.
