Lindsay Davenport recently announced that she was pregnant and due in the summer of 2007, but she hasn’t officially retired. Davenport’s record speaks for itself – 3 Grand Slam titles (U.S. Open, Wimbledon, Australian Open) among her 51 singles titles. In addition, Lindsay was one of those rare top players who always played a lot of doubles, winning 36 titles including titles at Wimbledon, Roland Garros and the U.S. Open.People always comment on her solid groundstrokes and heavy serve, but Lindsay also possessed very soft hands, great volleys and a real feel for the game. These were very evident in her doubles success which began as a top junior.Lindsay’s groundstrokes were honed through hours of hitting balls as a youngster with the famed coach, Robert Lansdorp, but I think her mental strength was underrated. You don’t become a champion like Lindsay without being able to play the big points well under pressure. She also learned how to win tough matches when she was not playing her best.Over the years, everyone commented on how Lindsay shed pounds and got herself into better physical shape. What really made Davenport special was how she maintained her humility while competing for over 15 years at the very top of the women’s game. She was one of those quiet champions whose accomplishments and presence may be appreciated even more once she’s off the tour.
