The men’s senior tennis tour has been around for many years in different incarnations. In the past year, former tour star, Jim Courier, has resurrected the seniors tour in the U.S. to complement the ATP’s efforts in Europe. Now it’s time for the ladies to return to the court. As Martina Navratilova’s popularity illustrated the past few years, fans are embracing the former champions even if they don’t hit quite as hard as the current stars or run as quickly. There are many former WTA stars who could still inspire fans with their play and charisma, e.g. Chris Evert, Evonne Goolagong, Tracy Austin, Gabriela Sabatini, Jana Novotna, Hana Mandlikova and of course Martina.Given the existing personal and professional demands on these players, it probably makes sense to start small, e.g. 2 events in 2007, one in the U.S. and one in Europe. So who’s going to take the lead – the WTA Tour or one of the former stars?
