
During the past six months, The LTA in England has been aggressively expanding its staff in the hope of boosting British tennis fortunes in coming years. It began with the hiring of Brad Gilbert last summer as both Andy Murray’s personal coach, as well as LTA coach for promising juniors. Since then, the LTA has brought on board, among others, Peter Lundgren from Sweden, former tour player and coach of both Roger Federer and Marat Safin, as well as Belgian Carl Maes, Kim Clijsters’ former coach and currently the Belgian Federation Cup coach.

Sampras’s former coach and Tim Henman’s current coach, American Paul Annacone, has joined the LTA. Annacone will continue working with Henman and also take a leadership role in the LTA’s men’s coaching efforts. There have even been rumors of John McEnroe considering a part-time role. Stateside, there have been grumblings about American coaching talent crossing the pond, especially at a time when American professional tennis is suffering a bit. The reality is that tennis is a very international sport. In the same way that many foreign players train in the U.S. with American coaches because they seek the best advice and training, American coaches should be free to pursue the most challenging coaching opportunities and financial rewards for their services.
