There is often much debate surrounding players’ rankings, the race for the year-end Championships and who is “Number One” both during the year and for the year as a whole. The tennis world has tried many methods to create clarity, as well as excitement around the rankings race. However, most fans, even the most ardent, often not only don’t really understand the ranking system, but also aren’t that focused on the “race to the championships.”Many PR efforts have tried to create a following for rankings similar to what exists in the American professional team sports or worldwide soccer championships. However, like professional golf, tennis rankings are really a very different animal. For example, players’ rankings are calculated on a rolling basis year-round so that results from the previous 12 months are counted, not just from the current calendar year. One way to create more excitement and positive pressure on the players would be to start the ranking race from January first each year so it matches the “race to the year-end championships.”This system would create more clarity for fans and force players to focus on each year anew.
