Remember Australian player Alicia Molik? Only two years ago, Molik was ranked in the top 10 on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour and she reached the quarterfinals of the 2005 Australian Open narrowly losing to Lindsay Davenport 9-7 in the third set. After that success, Molik spent almost 18 months off the tour due to a serious inner ear problem which affected her balance, etc. She’s been working her way back on the tour for the past 6 months. Although she would have certainly been granted a wildcard into the 2007 Australian Open, Molik chose to compete in the recent wildcard tournament to earn her berth, which she did by winning the mini-tournament. As Molik said, “It's nice to be given a wildcard… but I'm going to rock up to the first round knowing that I've earned my spot and I deserve to be there, I should be there, and it's quite a different feeling,”
When Andre Agassi's ranking dipped below 100 because of a wrist injury, Agassi chose to compete in a couple lower tier challenger tournaments to play himself back into shape.
Agassi eventually made it all the way back to the top of the rankings.
Let’s hope that Molik can channel that awesome Aussie competitive spirit onto Rod Laver arena during the 2007 Australian Open.
