There’s been a real treat for tennis fans at the 2007 Australian Open.Marcos Baghdatis is playing in the Men’s Doubles event this year with little-known Greek player, Konstantinos Economidos.Fans packed an outside court to get a close up view of the charismatic Cypriot. On the women’s side, defending Australian Open singles champion, Amelie Mauresmo, is competing in the Women’s Doubles event with fellow Frenchwoman, Severine Bremond, who made a strong run at Wimbledon in 2006.This is another win-win situation because the players get some extra practice in a doubles match situation where they can work on a few things in a less-pressurized environment than a singles match. At the same time, tennis fans get the opportunity to see the top players compete up close and personal. With all the talk about the demise of doubles, once again what’s clear is that it’s really all about who is playing….Bring out the top stars for a first round doubles match on an outside court and the seats are packed.
