Looks Can Be Deceiving

On set point in Amelie Mauresmo’s match the other day against Olga Poutchkova, Mauresmo challenged a line call and the instant replay showed space between the ball and the line, but the screen said the ball was “in.” The official explanation was that the call was correct, but the graphic on the big screen was wrong. With a minor computer adjustment, we’re told it shouldn’t happen again. As Amelie Mauresmo said afterwards, “That was very strange, very strange… the image was very clear that there was a space between the impact and the line, but it stayed in… I have to ask the question. I mean maybe something was wrong or not well. I don’t know. It was very funny. Everybody could see, but what can we do? It’s the machine.” One usually assumes that technology is “always correct” so how does one react the next time, when that confidence has been shaken?
