No American Women Seeded
This year was the first time in a VERY long time that no American woman was seeded at the Australian Open. In fact, American women have actually won the Australian Open five out of the last seven years. People often talk about cycles, but my guess is that this history probably won’t be repeated for a while. Tennis has always been a very international sport, but it is even more diverse these days. The historical domination of the sport of tennis by Australian and American players is a thing of the past. Even the recent Russian tennis revolution is already being slightly overshadowed by the Chinese, Serbs, Croatians, etc. But it’s all good because it opens up even more opportunities around the globe for additional tournaments, sponsorship and most importantly, more kids being inspired to play the game.
