In her post-match press conference after her first round victory at the 2007 Australian Open, Serena Williams talked about her prospects for the year.
It was interesting, albeit a little surprising, to realize how focused she is on her ranking rather than simply playing better, etc.
For example, Serena commented about how she only has third round points to defend from the 2006 Australian Open and no points from the French Open and Wimbledon so her ranking could really only go up if she has good results.
In a way, Serena's comments showed exactly how much pressure she's feeling in trying to get back to the top of the game and how different her current mindset is from a few years ago.
For example, I doubt Roger Federer thinks about how many points he needs to defend when he thinks about the year ahead.
As always, it's really all about how one deals with the pressure because everyone feels it.
