Privacy Please

heninready

Justine Henin-Hardenne recently uttered a similar phrase in announcing her withdrawal from the Sydney International and the 2007 Australian Open for “personal family reasons.”  Henin-Hardenne’s withdrawal has sparked a fair amount of mystery and debate.  Rumors center on whether she may be getting a divorce, but we still don’t know yet exactly why she pulled out.  As the Number One ranked player in the world is it acceptable to offer such a vague explanation for such a major withdrawal?  How much privacy should top athletes be allowed?  It’s a tough one… Top tennis players are international mega-celebrities who earn millions as a result.  But in the end, they’re still just people and they’re not elected officials.  Politicians and celebrities are both in the public eye, but there should be a different standard in terms of full disclosure.  Therefore, tennis players should be entitled to their privacy when they clearly desperately want it as Justine does now.  Time will answer most questions.  As we wait, let’s give her some space…
