Martina Hingis, recently engaged to 19th-ranked Czech player, Radek Stepanek, arrived in Australia sporting a diamond engagement ring. A year ago, Hingis arrived “down under” to come out of retirement and restart her career after three years off. Now a top 10 player again, Hingis also enters a new phase in her life with her engagement. It will be interesting to see what, if any, effect her engagement has on her playing career. There have not been many married top 10 players in recent memory besides Justine Henin-Hardenne and Lindsay Davenport. Chris Evert, Evonne Goolagong, Zina Garrison and Manuela Maleeva were in a previous generation. Most players like Hingis start on tour at such a young age that they end up quitting the tour and then tying the knot. It will be an interesting statistical analysis to find out if off-court happiness leads to (more) on-court success for Hingis?
