Saving the Best for Last

serenaserve

The 2007 Australian Open Women's Final was one of those matches where one player, Serena Williams, played her best match of the tournament while Maria Sharapova played one of her worst matches of the tournament.  Although the match felt closer than the final score because Sharapova had game points in many games that she didn't win, it was still Serena's match.  So how and why does that happen?  It's hard for even the players to understand their performances sometimes, but it felt as if Serena finally didn't feel so much pressure while in a way, Sharapova played as if she did feel the weight of the opportunity and therefore pressed too much.  Regardless, this win will probably positively impact Serena Williams' future much more than the loss will affect Sharapova.  It should be an exciting year on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour with Henin playing again, Mauresmo and Clijsters all in the hunt.
