The 2007 ATP round robin test has begun... The new format guarantees that players will play at least two matches.
There are three different round robin scenarios with varying numbers of players being implemented at 13 ATP events.
Each tournament starts with a series of round robin matches with the winners advancing into a traditional draw starting at, for example, the quarterfinal round.
As with the many "innovations" being tested by the ATP and WTA these days, round robins offer many positives, e.g. more chances to see the top players,
predictable scheduling for TV and promoters, etc.
The only real changes are that players may sometimes get a
"second chance"
to continue in the tournament and could conceivably have to play “meaningless” round robin matches.
For example, a player could lose a match in the round robin, but still eventually win the tournament. Yes, this is a break with tradition, but is it really such a bad thing?
Doesn't everyone deserve a second chance at times?
