A New Day

jamesblakeforehand

Last Sunday, Xavier Malisse was trailing James Blake in the finals of the Delray Beach ATP tournament, but play was called for the night due to rain after Blake had won the first set and they were in the middle of the second set.  On Monday, Malisse came back and won the second and third sets to take the title.  Malisse’s victory is certain to continue the debate about the ATP’s round
robin tournaments in 2007.  Malisse actually lost a match in the round robin matches, but still advanced to the finals and then eventually won the tournament.  Is that "fair"?  Sure it is.  James Blake was the "second best" player in that tournament for that week and in the end he also lost one match during the week.  However, since Malisse won their “head-to-head” match, he became the champion.  Ok, maybe that rationalization is a bit of a stretch, but Malisse deserved the title in the end with his overall play for the week.  Btw, he also won the doubles title!  Should there be round robins in Grand Slams?  No, that’s a bad idea.  But the weekly tournaments are additional competition for the players.  Therefore, let’s make them as entertaining as possible for the fans and give the players the most match practice.
