Last summer, a few weeks prior to the 2006 U.S. Open, Martina Hingis lost in the finals of the Canadian Open to Ana Ivanovic. In that match, Ivanovic, who was in the midst of a strong rise up the rankings, played very confidently. On the other side of the net, Hingis was clearly struggling and took advantage of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour’s on-court coaching test by asking her mom/coach to come courtside during the match a couple times. At the recent Pan Pacific Open in
Tokyo, Hingis avenged that loss with a two set victory. Hingis started off 2007 with a strong showing at the Australian Open losing in three tough sets to Kim Clijsters in the quarterfinals. On the other hand, 13th seeded Ivanovic was upset by 22nd seeded Vera Zvonereva in the third round of the Australian Open. There are often subtle ebbs and flows in a player’s performance over a long season, but Hingis seems to be maintaining her place in the top ten with her recent play while Ivanovic needs to notch a few more wins to continue her rise up the rankings.
