Who Needs Practice?!

serenavolleypractice

It is very impressive how both Serena and Venus Williams have managed to return to the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour and win tournaments with so little match play.  The standard wisdom is that you need to practice your strokes, play practice matches, get in shape and then get back on the tour.  Usually, it takes players several tournaments or months to feel “match tough” enough to play their best tennis in the key moments of a match.  Serena’s tournament prep before her recent
Australian Open title was minimal and not that successful.  Venus Williams, back on tour after several months off due to a wrist injury, just beat rising Israeli, Shahar Peer, 6-1 6-1 to win the title in her first tournament back.  Granted, Venus did not play any top 10 players, but she still beat Peer very convincingly.  So how do Serena and Venus do it?  It must go back to the beginning of their tennis careers.  Serena and Venus both joined the tour with little or no junior competition.  They both spent their younger years focusing on improving their games and then basically bypassed juniors for the pros.  Therefore, they have clearly been able to develop enough confidence in their games through practice that they can manage to produce top level tennis with very little tournament play.  This route does not work for most players, but clearly Serena and Venus have managed to achieve a lot of success by following their own paths.
