23 Going On...

Sometimes tennis fans look at a player’s age and mistake the player’s calendar age for his/her “real age”… there can often be a big difference! Most tennis pros have been competing and traveling internationally since their early teens. When someone like Kim Clijsters retires in her early 20s to move into the second phase of her life choosing to become a wife and future mother in her 20s, one needs to remember that Clijsters has already been on tour for close to a decade.
Venus Williams, who at 26 is now being labeled an elder stateswoman on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, made her pro debut in 1994. Roger Federer, at age 25, has lived the last few years in such a bright public spotlight that he has been forced to mature beyond his 25 years. In a way, it makes it easier to understand how someone like Bjorn Borg could walk away from the top of the sport at the age of 26. Fortunately, Federer has said he plans to play until at least the age of 30!

I'm impressed with how well so many young tennis players have matured and didn't fall through the cracks. Kudos to Kim Clijsters for knowing when to move onto the next phase of her life! She's a great tennis player and has always behaved graciously in defeat and in victory.
