"GOATs" at Play

On his way to the Pacific Life 0pen in Indian Wells, California, Roger Federer stopped in Los Angeles for a couple days and practiced with Pete Sampras. Federer said he called Sampras, but you have to think that Pete was just a little buzzed to hit some balls with Federer given all the talk over the past year comparing the two superstars. The discussion has centered on whether Federer or Sampras is the "GOAT" aka "greatest of all time." Let's leave that debate for now... Instead, it
is fascinating that given the plethora of potential practice partners, Federer would choose to hone his game against his former idol. Although Federer would not disclose the results of their practice sets, it seemed clear from his response that the current Number One bested his former idol. This is not at all surprising given that Federer is in top match shape and Sampras is gearing up for a few stops on the over-35s Champions Tour. The real significance is that the hitting sessions between the two superstars happened at all and not who won or lost a couple practice sets. Do you ever remember Jimmy Connors practicing with Rod Laver or Maria Sharapova with Steffi Graf?
