Moms on Tour

There are a couple moms currently competing on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, but their names will not ring a bell to most tennis fans. However, in past generations there were a couple rather famous moms making their mark on the circuit. Margaret Court, the Australian multiple Grand Slam champion, lost the 1971 Wimbledon final to Australian, Evonne Goolagong, when Court was pregnant with her first child which she delivered in the winter of
1972. Court went on to capture three Grand Slam titles after giving birth. Evonne Goolagong followed suit and became the first mom to win a Wimbledon title, when she won there in 1980. Other recent champions such as Chris Evert, Tracy Austin and Steffi Graf have retired from the tour and had children. Although they have continued to compete in exhibitions and senior events, none competed on the WTA Tour after having their children. Time will tell whether current stars, such as Lindsay Davenport who is pregnant with her first child, will retire or return to the tour after giving birth.
