Monsieur Moustache

The legendary Romanian, Ian Tiriac, has now joined a rather elite group... The sixty-seven-year-old Tiriac, whose net worth is estimated to be $1.1 billion, is ranked 840th on the new Forbes list of the world's billionaires. Tiriac, the first Romanian to make the list, has made a very lucrative transition from star athlete to successful businessman. Tiriac, who competed on the pro tennis tour also competed for Romania in hockey at the 1960 Olympics. Although Tiriac was a talented tennis
player, most current tennis fans remember him as Boris Becker's agent. Tiriac, in dark sunglasses and bushy moustache, was a fixture in the player's box during Becker's heyday. Tiriac also guided the career of the talented Croat, Goran Ivanisevic, and then moved into tennis tournament promotion. Tiriac is still involved with tennis, e.g. the Madrid tournaments, but he's really made his fortune through shrewd investments in banking, insurance, retail and auto leasing (e.g. Mercedes) and later real estate in Romania.

A few years ago I had a chance of spending about an hour's time with Mr. Tiriac while driving him to a place in Boca Raton, Fl. I will never forget his polite, friendly and unpretentious personality. A real pleasure was his company and a wealth of solid information on the wonderful sport of tennis.
It was a great memory of a great person.
