Quantity Versus Quality

balloncourt

With the recent announcement that Wimbledon will offer equal prize money for men and women at the 2007 Championships, the question of the number of sets played by men and women has been debated yet again.  Many people who opposed the equal prize money argued the fact that men play three out of five sets while the women only play two out of three sets.  At the same time, some wonder why the women don’t play three out of five sets.

These seem moot points in many ways because tennis should really be about quality and not quantity.  In addition, there are some three set women’s finals that last longer than certain men’s finals.  Tennis, like many highly-skilled businesses, should reward the very best “laborers” for their talent and expertise rather than for how long it takes them to accomplish their tasks.
